It’s always exciting to get a new bird in your yard. This morning I happen to look out at the right time & see an ovenbird under my feeders. An ovenbird is not a seed eater but he might have been passing through & stopped to find insects or even drink from my bird bath. I have a wooded backyard which is an ideal habitat for an ovenbird. Most likely this bird is migrating further south for the winter. The ovenbird gets its name for the shape of its nest which resembles an old fashion outdoor oven complete with a roof. It has a rapid, distinctive call that sounds like: “Teacher! Teacher! Teacher!” An ovenbird is most often heard but not seen as it blends in with its woodland habitat. The ovenbird didn’t stay long but long enough for me to get a few pictures. Now I’m off to find my Yard List & check off OVENBIRD.
